What Are Wire Rope Clips?

Often used to lift heavy loads, wire rope consists of braided strands of metal that make it strong enough to carry its respective load. However, in order to use wire rope, it must be secured to an anchor point that has been specifically designed for this type of rope. As such, wire rope clips are load-bearing components that can be mounted to the top of an object, after which a wire rope can be secured to it. Once placed, the clip will hold the wire rope, making it possible to lift the object it is mounted to, and they are often chosen to join two wire rope cables together. These mechanisms are popular because they are easy to install and provide 80-90% efficiency of the rope’s breaking strength depending on the diameter of the wire rope itself. Wire Rope Clip Types: U-Bolt

There are different wire rope clip types, and each works a bit differently. For example, the U-bolt is a commonly used type of clip that consists of the U-bolt itself, a saddle (a metal base), and a pair of nuts. The semicircular U-bolt rests on top of the saddle, and the nuts are threaded fasteners connected to the bottom of the bolt itself. To utilize this type of wire rope clip, you must first remove the nuts from the mechanism so that you can insert the U-bolt wire rope clip on top of the object you are trying to lift. Once this happens, you can reattach the nuts which will hold the wire rope clip to the respective object, and you can then lift the object when you place the wire rope through the middle of the U-bolt.

There are 2 U-bolt wire rope clips: forged wire rope clips and malleable wire rope clips. To start, forged wire rope clips have a base made of forged steel, and they are heated and hammered into the intended shape, creating a consistent grain structure in the steel. They find use in heavy-duty overhead loads like winch lines, crane hoist lines, support lines, and many others. On the other hand, malleable wire rope clips are utilized for lighter-duty uses, and the base is built of malleable cast iron which has the potential to fracture under heavy use, unlike steel.

Wire Rope Clip Types: Double Saddle

Another type of clip is the double saddle wire rope clip, which has two saddles that each feature a built-in bolt connected to a nut. To place this type of wire rope clip on an object, you can simply remove the nuts and reapply them once the intended ropes have been situated. A benefit to using double saddle wire rope clips is that they can be used in either direction, making installation simple.
